Alina Bea
Alina Bea
With Alina Bea, the door might look familiar, but what’s behind it is never quite what you expect. Alina is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, and dancer making progressive pop music in Los Angeles. She intertwines inventive compositions and textures with timeless pop song structure and intimate, deeply felt lyrics, leading a voyage to deep space, but showing it to you through a familiar lens. Her recordings carry a carefully honed energy, at one turn tectonic in impact and at the next impossibly delicate.

In live performances over the past year, Alina and her band combine the sophistication of acts like Bjork and St. Vincent with the raw power of artists like Kate Bush and Fiona Apple. Alina’s background in dance contributes to a live show that transcends the expected. Her performances are both warrior-strong and disarmingly vulnerable, drawing you in and transporting you to fascinating new places.

This new group of singles, a preview of her forthcoming album, marks a pivotal moment for Alina. On her debut EP, Live Undone, released February 2016 on New Professor, she used a bedroom electro-pop palette to write through the devastating breakup of her old band and her relationship. But Alina’s new material looks to the future, both lyrically and musically. Collaborating with producer and composer Theo Karon (Robert Gomez, Cross Record, Idlewild, Liphemra), she has vastly expanded the scope and ambition of her work, drawing new influence from experimental synthesis, electronics, and the classical avant-garde. As her lyrics explore and challenge the darkness within and without, startling and complex textures drawn from acoustic instruments mesh seamlessly with experiments in timbre and tone to form a body of work that is both direct and intricate.

DANKE HAS BEEN MAKING MUSIC SINCE SHE WAS A YOUNG GIRL. SHE WOULD SING MELODIES IN THE BATH TO HERSELF BEFORE BED, UNTIL SHE DISCOVERED A COMPANION IN THE PIANO AT AGE 10. SHE DIDN’T TAKE TO INSTRUCTION BUT RATHER WORKED OUT HER OWN MUSICAL LANGUAGE WRITING SONG AFTER SONG. AS SHE ENTERED HER TEENS, SHE STARTED HEARING THE 90s TRIP-HOP AND AMBIENT GENRES, WHOSE SOUNDS IGNITED HER PRACTICE, SPARKING THE FIERY FRESH CIRCUS OF BEATS, VOICE AND MELODY THAT SHE COMMANDS AS DANKE TODAY.
EVERYTHING FROM FRANK ZAPPA'S "HOT RATS" TO ERYKAH BADU'S "MAMA'S GUN" IS HEARD BLASTING FROM DANKE'S CHAMBERS. EMBRACING THE INFLUENCE OF MANY DIFFERENT GENRES, SETTINGS AND EXPERIENCES, DANKE'S MUSIC IS UNUSUAL, YET UNIVERSAL. HER CATCHY MELODIES, EPIC HARMONIES, UNIQUE PROGRESSIONS AND FAT BEATS MAKE "DANKE SOUND" APPEALING TO EVEN THE MOST JADED LISTENER. SHE NOW LIVES IN LOS ANGELES, WHERE SHE CONTINUES TO WRITE, CREATE AND ALTOGETHER EXPAND UPON HER INCREASINGLY BOLD MUSICAL ENDEAVORS.
POLARTROPICA
POLARTROPICA
POLARTROPICA makes crystal-cool, dreamy, orchestral electro/synth pop that will tickle your ears and imagination. The debut EP Astrodreams is set to be released on Lolipop Records (cass) on March 29, 2016! Intertwined within the "swirly burst of dreamy reverie" (Free Bike Valet) are themes of isolation, injustice, heartbreak, and corruption - all set under the glittery futuristic synths and classical string arrangements.

Combining her love for classical, pop and indie rock music, Ihui Wu (keyboardist for Sanglorians, Simone White, Ghostel) holed up in her tiny cottage in Highland Park and wrote the songs together with fellow music lover and friend Roman Salas. The songs were recorded with Silverlake-based producer C.M. Rodriguez over one of the hottest summers in California. With the help of many talented musicians, including Morgan Paros on violin, Joe Santa Maria on saxophone and Lauren Elizabeth Baba on viola/violin, the vision for Astrodreams came to life!! Come away to a distant land where macarons grow on trees, fuzzy baby flamingos nap in the warm sunshine and glitter clouds line the sky!

Inspired by sparkling mineral water, Totoro, Quentin Tarantino, James Bond and Aaliyah, POLARTROPICA is Ihui (eeway) Wu, Graham Chapman, Andrew Lessman and Alexander Noice and super secret special guests!!!
