In anticipation of the 2018 Frederick Douglass Bicentennial, Roger Guenveur
Smith returns to Bootleg with FREDERICK DOUGLASS NOW, described by the Los Angeles Times as “a personal benchmark for this remarkable artist.”
Smith bookends Douglass classic 19th century texts with original narrative to achieve a stylistic mash-up informed by the present American moment.
The four performance run of DOUGLASS will be followed by the final three live performances of Smith’s Bessie Award-winning RODNEY KING. Roger developed KING at Bootleg and has adapted it into a film which will premiere next month on Netflix.
Please note GA Tickets are $15 pre-sale, $20 Day of Showhttp://www.bootlegtheater.org/event/1437015/
He adapted his Obie-Award winning solo performance of A HUEY P. NEWTON STORY into a Peabody Award-winning telefilm.
His history-infused work also includes THE WATTS TOWERS PROJECT, ICELAND, JUAN AND JOHN, TWO FIRES, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS 1992, and 500 LIVES PER MILE.
He recently directed Steven Berkoff’s AGAMEMNON, Katori Hall’s THE MOUNTAINTOP, and, at Cal Arts, THE HENDRIX PROJECT.
