JULY- AUGUST 2011
Multidimensional actor/comedian/def poet Joe Hernández-Kolski premiered Awake at Bootleg Theatre. The show is the follow-up to Joe’s critically acclaimed production, You Wanna Piece of Me? — a work that received a glowing review in The New York Times. The Polish-Mexican Chicago native describes awake as an intimate stage performance incorporating spoken-word poetry, comedy, dance, and traditional storytelling to describe growing up in a modern world in flux. The show takes an in-depth look into Joe’s psyche as it gets pushed to its limits during his struggles with the typical problems that go along with being a single man: the breakups, the career choices, and the bittersweet realization that life is tough, unpredictable and sometimes unfair. He tells his story based on his unique multicultural perspective, and always with great humor.

LA Weekly: “it’s perfectly timed and delivered with a ferocity that careens from the satirical to the indignant.”
