Roger Guenveur Smith brings his solo RODNEY KING to the Bootleg stage, where it was developed before winning international acclaim. Smith will present three final live performances of KING before the April premiere of his greatly anticipated Netflix adaptation.
Smith’s performance is inspired by the life and times of the late Rodney King, whose savage beating by the LAPD sparked the riots/rebellion/uprising/insurrection of 1992.
25 years later, King’s saga still resonates in a performance which the New York Times called “sinuous, complicated, deeply moving.”
In anticipation of the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Rodney King tragedy and the LA Riots, Smith for the final time will perform his Bessie-Award winning RODNEY KING at Bootleg Theater.
Please note GA tickets are $15 pre-sale, $20 Day of Showhttps://www.bootlegtheater.org/event/1437018/
He adapted his Obie-Award winning solo performance of A HUEY P. NEWTON STORY into a Peabody Award-winning telefilm.
His history-infused work also includes THE WATTS TOWERS PROJECT, ICELAND, JUAN AND JOHN, TWO FIRES, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS 1992, and 500 LIVES PER MILE.
He recently directed Steven Berkoff’s AGAMEMNON, Katori Hall’s THE MOUNTAINTOP, and, at Cal Arts, THE HENDRIX PROJECT.
His many screen credits include the recently acclaimed BIRTH OF A NATION, DOPE, and CHI-RAQ.
