Balún
Balún
Brooklyn-based electronic indie band Balún self-identify as transnational. The quartet that broke out of the San Juan indie scene a decade ago has since undergone a formational odyssey through the industry, academia, and the stateside Puerto Rican experience. Since their early days as part of the DIY music scene in San Juan, Balún has built a reputation for genre-fluidity. As film school and conservatory students playing every available bill and selling home-burned CDRs to electronic, hardcore, and punk crowds, Balún amassed an eclectic following on the island. Relocating to Brooklyn, the band’s pursuits outside of Balún began reshaping the context of their music. Balún has blossomed from college students making music on freeware and toy instruments into world-class musicians merging their far-flung disciplines under one banner. With these elements beginning to coalesce, the band perpetually expanded its vision over the ensuing years. Releasing a series of singles, EPs and official remixes, Balún explored shoegaze, folk, and bedroom electronic pop, tying these forays together with the introspective magical-realism of Angélica Negrón’s lyrics. More recently he band’s deep understanding of reggaeton’s Jamaican dancehall roots has transformed their shoegaze pop into “dreambow.”
TWINKIDS
TWINKIDS
Queer pop duo TWINKIDS is pianist-producer Matt Young and Tokyo-native singer-songwriter Gene Fukui. After meeting at Oberlin College & Conservatory in northeast Ohio – the same rural campus that spawned the likes of Teengirl Fantasy, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Liz Phair – the two quickly discovered a mutual reverence for electronic music and began writing, producing, and performing as one.

TWINKIDS bring together Gene’s experience as a J-pop songwriter and Matt’s background in classical piano, delivering genre-bending tunes with catchy hooks and lush harmonies. Following releases on Cascine, Yellow Year Records, a collaboration with Australian singer-songwriter Sophie Lowe, and official remixes for Dawn Richard and Ghostly International, the LA-based duo signed with Om Records and garnered a number one charting song on Hype Machine with ‘Jigoku Tengoku’ along with a national tour with Matt and Kim and press support from NYLON, THE FADER, Stereogum, Billboard, and OUT Magazine.

Last summer TWINKIDS released their debut EP “Boys Love”, with the EP title paying homage to the gay romance manga genre of the same name. Drawing influence from 80’s J-pop and artists like Imogen Heap and Bjork, the EP’s five songs tell coming-of-age stories about falling in love
Twin Seas
Twin Seas
Like two oceans of sound, Twin Seas takes you on a voyage of tone that incorporates 60’s psychedelia and surf with warm synths and warbly melodies, reminiscent of 80’s synth pop. Upon the release of their debut self-titled album (“Twin Seas” October 2017), this East LA quartet has been playing in the underground scene regularly, building a buzz and sharpening their live show. With a follow-up EP, “Player 1” being released this last June, they are ready to take their unique sound to festivals and the rest of the country.
